Hats Off: Teacher Drives An Extra 20-Minutes Everyday For Leukemia Student
Jeff & Aimee are giving a Hats Off to an amazing teacher in Conneautville, Pennsylvania!
Second-grade teacher Barb Heim drives an extra 20-minutes after school to deliver her daily lesson to her second-grade student. Harrison Conner is currently fighting for his life against leukemia, which is a type of cancer that affects blood-forming tissues.
Heim gladly gives this lecture to ensure that her student doesn’t fall behind on school. Although in-class learning has returned at Conneaut Valley Elementary School, Harrison learns at home while he undergoes his leukemia treatments.
“It was a joy, because I knew he wanted to learn,” said Heim in an interview with TODAY. “He couldn’t wait. He was so excited. And he’d have his off days if medicine was causing him to not feel up to it. It wasn’t the best day for him, but we made it through. And he always did his best.”
Both Heim and Harrison wear a face mask during their lesson. Heim even wears a face shield and teaches behind plexiglass at Harrison’s home to practice COVID-19 protocols!
