Jeff has created a little bit of a side business for himself, making barn doors.

It all started back when Jeff and Emily moved into their new house in October of 2020. One thing they knew the needed was a divider between their bathroom and their bedroom. Jeff gets up so early for work and needs an area to get ready without disturbing Emily before she wakes up to teach little children every single morning.

That’s when Jeff took on the project of designing and building his very first barn door!

Here’s what Jeff’s first door looks like!

Jeff even created a TikTok about how to make this style of door!

After making this door, of course, Emily’s parents were dying to get one for their house!

So here we go, step by step directions on how to make your very own barn door!

• A Plan

  It's always important to take time to design the door on paper again and again. Take the opening of the door, add an inch about the height and four inches on the width (to leave you two inches on each side of the door when shut).

• Go Shopping!

  If you have your measurements, Home Depot will cut the wood for your for free, saves you a lot of time

• The Frame

  Lay out the frame, this is two 1x6's and two 1x4's to make the frame. Use pocket holes in the back to attach

• Tongue and Groove Board

  My neighbor wanted a rustic look so I got this tongue and groove board to use as the backing. Each piece is clamped to the previous piece and then nailed (using my Ryobi brad nailer) to the frame from the back side

  Now that we've got the board attached to the frame, we get the hard job of the cross pieces

  This is the hardest part of the project. You know what they say, measure twice, cut once. Well I measured about twelve times. Hardware stores will not do diagonal cuts so I used my miter saw to cut these angles.

• Time To Paint

  My least favorite part of every project but it really brings it to life so I have to stop complaining. Another white door, pretty classic barn door style. I like to use a paint that has built in primer.

  Don't forget to calk the seems of the board to ensure that no moisture gets between the boards and messes it up!
• Attach Your Hardware

  Now the fun part! Attach your Amazon ordered hardware, make sure to have a bit big enough for your drill to go through the door!

• The Final Product!

  Make sure to measure how high your hanging equipment must go to allow your door to float a quarter inch off of the ground. Run a header board across the top.
