Hats Off: Teacher Adopts His Student That Needed Kidney Transplant
Jeff & Aimee are giving a Hats Off to a teacher that taught the ultimate lesson to his student.
Math teacher Finn Lanning from Aurora, Colorado, opened his classroom and his heart for student Damien.
Damien was suffering from a kidney disease that desperately required a kidney transplant, according to CBS News.
To make matters worse, Damien was also in foster care because social services were unable to find a foster family to meet his medical needs. Damien was then forced to leave school and move into a hospital because of it, according to CBS News.
“It hit me like a ton of bricks. I mean, you just can’t sit across from somebody you care about and hear them say something like that and know that you have room to help,” said Lanning, in a CBS News interview.
That’s when Lanning stepped in to help his student, Damien. Lanning fostered Damien and helped him during his dialysis treatments.
Damien was excited over his new foster home!
“I was like, ‘Yes! I get out of the hospital.’ But I was like, ‘My math teacher? Out of all the people?'” said Damien.
The teen has since received a new kidney under the care of Flanning. A few months ago Flanning adopted Damien!
