Hats Off: Principal Takes Night Job To Support His Struggling Students
Jeff & Aimee are giving a Hats Off to a principal in South Carolina!
Principal Henry Darby dedicates his life to better the lives of his students at North Charleston High School. His determination lead him to take on an overnight job at Walmart stocking shelves, according to TODAY.
“I get a little emotional, because when you’ve got children you’ve heard, sleeping under a bridge, or a former student and her child, they’re sleeping in a car, or when you go to a parent’s house because there’s problems and you knock on the door, there are no curtains and you see a mattress on the floor,” said Darby in an interview with TODAY.
Every penny that Darby gets from his Walmart job is used to support his students. Taking on this job Darby wanted to be very low-key about it. Even going as far as not telling his Walmart store manager that he works as a principal during the day.
Although Darby didn’t want anyone to know about his selfless actions he would get a surprise of a lifetime.
Walmart Store Manager Cynthia Solomon surprised Darby with a $50,000 check after finding out about Darby’s heroic actions.
“Even before we knew, there was something special about him,” said Solomon in an interview with TODAY. “I would be so happy to have Mr. Darby for as long as he will have us as a part of his family and beyond.”
“You’re awesome and we appreciate you here at Walmart for all you are doing to serve your community,” Solomon continued.
Darby doesn’t have any plans to leave his job at Walmart.
“These students, they are the best of the best. We love them dearly,” said Darby.
