Eldorado High School Changes Their School’s Mascot
Well, this one of definitely going to feel weird for anyone who grew up in Las Vegas, but Eldorado High School will no longer be known as the Sun Devils. El Dorado High School, one of the oldest schools in the Las Vegas valley has announced that they’ll be changing its school’s nickname and mascot to the Firehawks starting in August.
As a former athlete, who has competed at Eldorado on numerous occasions, it’s going to take a long time for me to get used to the new nickname. I’ve never known the school to be anything else, because throughout my lifetime, it hasn’t been.
Eldorado High School Isn’t The Only School To Change Their Mascot Recently
This isn’t the first school in the Clark County School District to change their mascot. A couple of year ago, when driving past my old middle school, Kenny C. Guinn, I noticed that they also changed their mascot! Kenny C. Guinn, when I went there, was known as the home of the Trojans. However, these days they’re known as the home of the Titans.
Eldorado has been the Sun Devils for half a century, according to a report by the Las Vegas Review Journal. According to their reporting, they adopted the nickname through an agreement with Arizona State University (ASU). However, that agreement has concluded, which is the reason for the change/rebranding to the Firehawks.
Eldorado High School Has Been Using Sparky For a While
The LVRJ explains further that the original trademark deal with ASU began in 2011. According to ASU’s guidelines, for a high school to use ASU’s mascot, Sparky, all agreements need to be in writing, with royalties and other considerations as deemed appropriate.
Channel 3 also covered the story and mentioned that students and parents were made aware of possible mascot change throughout this last school year.
The Football Team At Eldorado High School Has Been Ready
I pulled up the school’s website and noticed that they’ve already swapped over to the new Firehawk logo. It’s nice, I actually like it. But doing some further investigation, it looks like the school’s football team has been ready for the swap.
On their social media accounts, the team has adopted the new logo since March.
