It’s one of the signs that lives at the museum. Also, my father, who is now retired, used to be a metal worker at YESCO. There are so many signs that my father worked on that also reside there.
The Future of The Neon Museum
The museum has been a beloved Las Vegas landmark for years. It’s a fan-favorite spot to have photoshoots and make meaningful memories with loved ones. And they just announced this week that they have upcoming plans to not only relocate, but to expand as well!
The news about the upcoming plans was shared at a Las Vegas City Council meeting and they say the museum aims to triple the size of its current location.
According to a report by 8 News Now, there are 2 potential expansion sites in the Las Vegas Arts District. The 1st site will feature a 60,000 sq-ft outdoor display space and a 47,000 sq-ft indoor display area. The 2nd site is just a short walk away from the 1st and will offer another 35,000 sq-ft of space.
My Personal Connection To The Neon Museum
Sounds like it’ll be a significant upgrade for the museum and I’m excited to see it come into fruition. The museum truly is a special place for me. I’ve spoken about it on the air, but my dad, Luis Garcia, played such a huge role in building a lot of the iconic signs that are showcased in the current location. I think my personal favorite is the famous Hard Rock Guitar sign that was even featured in the movie, “Honey, I Blew Up The Kid.”
I was 8-years-old when the movie came out and I distinctly remember how proud my dad was when he learned the sign would appear in a Hollywood movie. Our entire family watched it at the local drive-in theater, and when the sign showed up on the screen, I’ll never forget how his face lit up with happiness. It’s a memory I’ll hold onto for the rest of my life.
My pops is now in his 70s and he’s been retired from the sign making business for a few years, but his legacy lives on via so many signs that are still operating around town, and of course, the ones that now live at the Neon Museum.
Whatever happens with the relocation, I’m so happy that his work will be preserved and enjoyed by future generations.
