‘There’s No Further Threat,’ Sheriff Kevin McMahill Says About UNLV Shooting
UPDATE: Sheriff Kevin McMahill said there are three victims, and the extent of the injuries are unknown. But, this number could change.
The alleged shooter is now dead, according to The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
“There’s no further threat,” Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a press briefing on Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. McMahill also confirmed that there are victims, but there were no details available about the number of victims.
“We have no idea on the motive, there are a number of victims that’ve been transported to area hospitals,” McMahill said. “So I don’t want to give you false information and tell you how many victims that we have.”
McMahill said he will provide more updates shortly. There is also a reunification center for students and families in the North Hall of the Convention Center and a website for further assistance www.facofsouthernnevada.org.
The sheriff also said that officers are going unit by unit and building by building to ensure that there are no additional victims or other subjects.
All Nevada higher institutions are closed for the day, according to UNLV.
UNLV Shooting On Wednesday
Earlier in the day, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said they were able to contain a suspect. About seven minutes later, police tweeted, “The suspect has been located and is deceased.”
The previous tweet said, “The suspect is contained. This is an active investigation. Please continue to avoid the area and watch for responding emergency units.”
Early Wednesday afternoon, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said they are responding to an active shooter at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
According to a social media post by the police department, there appeared to be multiple victims at the time of the post’s publishing.
Channel 13 further reported that, “On social media and through email alerts, UNLV officials said the shooter is located in Frank and Estella Beam Hall.”
UNLV issued emergency alerts on its website. The first alert came at 11:54 a.m. The alert said, “University Police responding to report of shots fire in BEH evacuate to a safe area, RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.”
The university issued another alert at 12:24 p.m. that said, “University Police continues to respond to an active shooter in BEH. Continue to shelter-in-place.”
The most-recent emergency notification was issued at 12:26 p.m. and said, “University Police responding to additional report of shots fired in the Student Union, evacuate the area, RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.”
Social media users are flooding the school’s comments with sentiments of worry, shock and more.
Police further said to avoid UNLV and the surrounding area.
