In Macon, Georgia, there’s a collegiate summer baseball team that proudly goes by the name “Macon Bacon.” With a delightful team moniker and a seven-foot bacon slice mascot named Kevin (cue the Kevin Bacon pun), they bring a sense of fun and entertainment to the field.

However, not everyone finds it amusing. A group advocating for animal rights, called the “Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine,” asserts that bacon consumption increases the risk of cancer. They’ve taken issue with the team’s name, urging them to adopt a healthier alternative.

Despite the criticism, the president of the Macon Bacon expressed surprise at the backlash, which even manifested on billboards across the city. He emphasized that the team does not consider themselves a glorification of an unhealthy lifestyle. On the contrary, their focus lies in fostering a spirited and enjoyable atmosphere that brings families and communities together.

The president also pointed out that while they do serve generous portions of bacon at the stadium, they also provide plant-based options for those with different dietary preferences. As for the team name, he made it clear that a change is out of the question, stating firmly, “[We] will not consider a name change. Ever.”

Thus, the Macon Bacon team stands resolute in their commitment to their beloved name and their mission of delivering lighthearted entertainment and camaraderie to their fans.

  • The Best Food Named Team?

I’m sure the Macon Bacon would consider themselves the greatest baseball team named after an article of food. But what do you think? I know a lot of locals went to see Banana Ball when it was in town earlier this year. The Savannah Bananas are such a fun team to watch! Some people would even call them the greatest show in sports!

  • World's Tallest Player

One of my favorite Savannah Banana gags is the world’s tallest batter. Dakota “Stilts” Albritton is the player who comes out on… you guessed it… stilts. Dakota towers over other players and it’s just another thing that makes the Bananas so fun to watch.
