Can You Transform into a Morning Person?

Monday mornings can be tough even for those who typically embrace early starts. However, if you find yourself consistently struggling with mornings, this study might hold the answers you’ve been seeking. Baylor University recently conducted research focusing on the distinctions between “night owls” and “morning people” and whether it’s possible to transition from one to the other.

According to the study’s findings, genetics play a significant role in our sleep preferences. Some individuals are naturally inclined to stay up later, seemingly programmed that way. However, the researchers also identified certain lifestyle choices that can exacerbate morning difficulties.

Over the course of a year, the study closely monitored the sleep patterns of 858 college students. By examining various factors, they aimed to shed light on the possibility of transforming into a morning person.

Becoming a morning person requires conscious effort and a few adjustments to your daily routine.

Here are four key practices to avoid if you aspire to greet the early hours with energy and enthusiasm…

  • Unplug before bed:

It’s crucial to disconnect from electronic devices before hitting the hay. Put the phone down. Get off of social media. Resist the temptation to use your phone or watch TV while in bed as the blue light emitted can interfere with your sleep quality.

  • Limit Caffeine Intake:

Reserve your coffee consumption for the morning hours. It is advisable to avoid consuming caffeine at least six hours before bedtime. This ensures that the stimulating effects of caffeine do not interfere with your sleep quality.

  • Keep Naps Short:

While short power naps of around 30 minutes can be acceptable, be cautious of longer naps. Extensive daytime sleeping can lead to difficulties in falling asleep at night, hindering your progress in becoming a morning person.

  • Opt for morning or afternoon exercise:

Engaging in vigorous physical activity in the evening can stimulate your body, making it difficult to unwind. Instead, schedule your workouts for the morning or early afternoon to reap the benefits of increased alertness and a more restful night’s sleep.

By avoiding these habits and making mindful choices throughout the day, you can enhance your chances of transforming into a morning person and embracing the early hours with vitality.
