Police Have A New Way To Bust People Who Text And Drive
Even though the majority of states have a ban on texting while driving, that hasn’t stopped a plethora of people from texting or browsing the internet while operating a vehicle.
According to WSBTV, nine people are killed each day and nearly one thousand people suffer injuries at the hands of a distracted driver.
The unfortunate aspect of distracted driving is it can be difficult for authorities to prove a driver was using a mobile device at the time a crash occurred.
However, new technology hopes to change that.
Currently, three states across the country are working with legal teams to allow officers to use Textalyzer machines in suspected distracted driver cases. Additionally, several other states are discussing using the Textalyzer machine in the near future.
The Textalyzer works similar to how the Breathalyzer machine works, except instead of alcohol, the Textalyzer monitors phone usage.
Once a mobile device is plugged into the Textalyzer, all recent data (included app usage) is displayed on the screen.
While several lawmakers and citizens are in favor of the Textalyzer, others feel the machine violates the Fourth Amendment.
