Last Wednesday, a Las Vegas man gained national attention when he attacked a judge.
Now, the attacker, Deobra Redden, 30, will face charges of attempted murder on an older person along with a plethora of other charges, according to Fox 5.
What Happened?
The video capturing the incident gained instant social media attention. According to 8 News Now, Redden was in court and awaiting a sentence on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. Mary Kay Holthus was the judge overlooking the case.
In the video from the incident — moments before the attack — Judge Holthus said, “I appreciate that, but I think it’s time that you get a taste of something else because I just can’t with that history,” in regards to Redden saying he was trying to “do better.”
Quickly after Holthus said her statement, Redden said, “F**k that b*tch!” Redden then leaped over the bench and started attacking Holthus, CNN reported.
Multiple news organizations reported that although Holthus suffered some injuries, she returned to work.
The Aftermath of the Video
The video gained attention from multiple national news organizations. It was quite shocking to witness the quickness of the attack.
On Monday, Holthus finished sentencing Redden, with added security, according to the Washington Post. Judge Holthus ended up sentencing Redden to 19 to 48 months in prison on the original charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. This was not the sentence for the courtroom attack.
Redden will face a different judge regarding the “15 new felony and misdemeanor charges related to the courtroom attack,” The Guardian reports.
What We Know About Deobra Redden
Redden’s sister told Court TV that he was “born with mental illness, he was born with crack-cocaine in his system. So his chance at life was taken at birth.”
She further said that deep inside, he’s a good person. However, he was never given the opportunity to be surrounded by positive people.
“When we struggle from mental illness, it’s a chemical imbalance,” Redden’s sister said to Court TV. She said that Redden should be surrounded by healthcare professionals, so he can get the proper treatment he needs..
Redden’s foster mother told Court TV that she told Redden, “No way do we condone it (the attack), but I know your (Redden’s) struggles, I know the voices that you hear.”
“Even when I got him from the foster care system at age 12, it was documented that he was severely emotionally disturbed. By the time he was 18, he left and branched out on his own,” Redden’s foster mother said.
Fox 5 reports that Redden’s next appearance is set for Feb. 14.
