Google Trends has released a list of the top misspelled words in each state based on “How to spell [BLANK]” searches.

While some words on the list are understandably challenging, such as “Shenanigans” in Michigan, “miscellaneous” in New Mexico, “embarrassed” in Kentucky, “kindergarten” in Minnesota, and “professional” in Wyoming, many others should be easily spelled correctly.

While we won’t delve into all 50 words, here are some highlights:

Kansas struggles with the spelling of “Tennessee.” Other nine-letter words causing difficulty include “beautiful,” “efficient,” and “etiquette.”

The map is dominated by seven- and eight-letter words. North Carolina has trouble with “awesome,” Missouri with “February,” Iowa with “Thursday,” and both Arkansas and Illinois with “tomorrow” (which, at the time of writing this, is also Thursday).

  • Nevada, we have a PROBLEM

Alabama falters with “daughter,” North Dakota with “science,” New York with “quarter,” Texas with “pyramid,” Idaho with “sentence,” and Nevada seems to have an ongoing issue with the word “problem.”

  • What's going on in Arizona?

Sixteen states grapple with five- and six-letter words. Delaware struggles with “those,” Utah with “chose,” Tennessee with “sugar,” Georgia with “queen,” Pennsylvania with “people,” and in Arizona, the most searched phrase is “how to spell GEORGE” (???).

  • It's different in the U.K.

Lastly, two states encounter difficulties with four-letter words. Colorado can’t recall how to spell “ally,” while Mississippi frequently searches for “how to spell gray.” It’s worth noting that the U.S. uses “gray” while the U.K. opts for “grey.”

Spelling can be a challenging endeavor, even with common words. Luckily, tools like Google Trends can help us navigate the complexities of language and provide insight into our collective spelling struggles.
