Former Las Vegas Aces Player Is Suing The Team And The WNBA
A former Las Vegas Aces player has officially filed a lawsuit against the professional basketball team and the league. So get this, it’s former player Dearica Hamby, and she’s accusing the team and the WNBA of discrimination, intimidation, and retaliation after she revealed that she was pregnant.
Hamby is a 3-time WBNA All Star and 2-time 6th Woman of the Year winner. She was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks in January of 2023, and it was around this time that she says she experienced a big shift in how the Las Vegas Aces treated her after she announced she was pregnant, according to a report by channel 13 KTNV – Las Vegas.
Hamby’s Allegations Towards Las Vegas Aces
But why would it matter if the Aces treated her differently if she was already on another team, you may be wondering? Hamby claims in the lawsuit that she was forced to vacate her team-provided housing and that the Aces stopped paying for her daughter’s private school tuition, which was a cost that the team had previously agreed to cover.
But that’s not all, Hamby also is alleging that the Aces coach, Becky Hammon, bullied her by questioning her commitment to the team by getting pregnant.
In a separate report by NPR, Hamby, who’s fresh off winning an Bronze medal for 3×3 basketball at the Paris Summer Olympic Games, also recounts a phone conversation with Hammon. During the conversation, Hamby’s lawyers say she asked twice if she was being traded because she got pregnant, to which Hammon allegedly said, “What do you want me to do?” without denying the accusation.
NPR mentions that the WNBA did investigate before the start of last season, which resulted in the Aces losing a 2025 1st-round pick and a 2-game suspension for Becky Hammon. But Hamby’s lawyers don’t think that’s nearly enough of a punishment to make things right, and they believe it sends a terrible message to any players in the league who wish to have children in the future.
KTNV reports that Coach Hammon denied the allegations.
