LVMPD Has Confiscated Over 17K Pounds Of Illegal Fireworks
Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no avoiding them, illegal fireworks painted the skies last night during the 4th of July – and if you’ve got neighbors like mine, there’s a good chance you’ll be seeing more in the upcoming days too.
On a personal note, the older I’ve gotten, the less fun I’ve had with the 4th of July. Of course, I love everything that the holiday stands for, but it’s the behavior of irresponsible people that has put a damper on my enjoyment of the 4th. Just last night, some new neighbors were lighting off mortar rounds on our street, and this morning the casings were everywhere. It’s those types of lazy people, who refuse to clean up after themselves that have made me dread a holiday that used to be one of my absolute favorites.
Illegal Fireworks Are Especially Dangerous In Dry Climates Like Las Vegas
Even though illegal fireworks have always presented a serious fire hazard, especially in a city as dry as Las Vegas, it has never deterred folks from purchasing them and lighting them off within our city.
While it’ll always be impossible for police to crack down on every illegal firework, local law enforcement did put a stop to a lot of them. According to a new article by the Las Vegas Review Journal, local authorities confiscated over 17 thousand pounds of illegal fireworks since the middle of June.
Authorities Were Busy Responding To Calls About Illegal Fireworks
With the record heat we’ve been seeing in Las Vegas, it comes as no surprise that authorities are taking it even more seriously this year. In fact, the Las Vegas Fire Department reported responding to over 80 incidents involving fireworks last night. According to the LVRJ’s reporting, the incidents included a burn injury, over 70 outdoor fires, 4 building fires, and 3 investigations involving smoke. Dispatch was BUSY last night, it’s being reported that between the hours of 6pm Thursday to 4am Friday, their communications center took over 1,180 emergency calls.
On the Las Vegas Metro Police Facebook page, authorities shared that they’ve also issued 229 citations for illegal fireworks since the middle of June.
