Earth Day in Nevada: Nevada Just Misses The Top 10 Most Eco-Friendly States
My family celebrated Earth Day in Nevada this weekend and I had a proud dad moment! On Saturday, while I was helping to host The Great Northwest Country Fest at Lone Mountain Equestrian Park, my wife and son were busy making our state a little cleaner.
Danielle, my wife, learned about a group cleanup at Red Rock Canyon. So, she and our boy spent a good chunk of Saturday cleaning up litter from alongside the road and the conservation area. When I got home from the concert, I asked our son if he had fun and he answered, “Dad, it was so much fun! I found cans and bottles, and we cleaned up the hiking trails!”
He went on about how “gross and lazy” people can be. He’s 7 and he’s already conscious about his effect on the environment. I think we do a good job with that. His mother, especially, but he went on to tell me that he can’t wait to “help clean the planet again!”
Earth Day In Nevada: Not Bad, But We Can Be Better
According to a new survey, my son isn’t the only Nevadan who’s aware of his impact on the planet. In fact, Nevada is near the top of the list for most eco-friendly states! There’s still room for improvement, but I’m just happy we’re closer to the top than we are to the bottom!
As the planet celebrates and recognizes Earth Day, the recent survey shed some light on how people in our country think about their own carbon footprint. 5,000 American were asked to rate themselves on a scale from 0 to 10, and it led to some pretty interesting insights on how eco-conscious residents are from different states!
At the top of the list is the land of enchantment, New Mexico! People from the state came out on top as the most eco-friendly bunch! They boasted an average score of 5.7 out of 10. And while the score might not look super impressive by itself, New Mexico’s focus on sustainability and conservation most likely contributed to their high ranking!
Nevada Just Missed The Top 10
As for Nevada, we came in with an average self-rating of 5.2 out of 10, which actually placed us just outside the top 10. Nevada ties for 11th place, but the study suggests that people in our state are notably aware and show concern for the environment!
That makes sense to me, as a local, because I feel like we’re constantly reminded about our impact on the environment. I can’t tell you how many “Be Water Smart” commercials I’ve seen this week, and when speaking to my family who live on the east coast, they think it’s so wild how many solar panel salesmen call my phone every week. Solar energy is big here. In recent years, Nevada has led the nation in solar industry jobs, according to an LVRJ article.
The other states, besides New Mexico, that beat us in the survey are California, Oregon, Delaware, Massachusetts, Vermont, Washington, Florida, Maryland, and Rhode Island.
The Least Eco-Friendly States Have Room For Improvement
At the bottom of the study, residents of South Carolina rated themselves the least eco-friendly state. They gave themselves a score of 3.9 out of 10. Tennessee, Arizona. Ohio, and Alabama were also within that ballpark.
