In-N-Out Bans Employee Mask Wearing In 5 States Including Nevada
Starting August 14, In-N-Out employees in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, and Utah will no longer be allowed to wear masks as part of new company guidelines that prioritize customer service and emphasize the importance of showing employees’ smiles. A majority of the chain’s locations are in California, where a policy requires employees to wear a company-provided N95 mask, as the company can’t ban masks in the state. However, employees in certain roles, like those working in the “patty room” or as lab technicians, are exempted from this requirement.
In-N-Out Sent Out A Memo
According to a company memo to workers, employees who wish to wear masks for Covid-19 safety reasons must provide a valid medical note exempting them from the mask requirement. The note should clearly state the reason for the exemption and the estimated duration. If approved, these employees will be provided with a company-provided N95 mask.
In-N-Out stated that their goal is to maintain a safe environment for both customers and employees while ensuring exceptional customer service. They believe the new guidelines balance the importance of displaying smiles and other facial features with health and safety standards.
While the company claims that the new policies are in compliance with evolving health guidelines, it’s worth noting that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends employees wear masks. Nonetheless, the changes come after President Joe Biden ended the Covid national emergency, and statewide mask mandates have mostly disappeared.
Social Media Speak Out
In-N-Out’s recent announcement of its new mask policy has sparked a significant response on social media, with many expressing their concerns and criticisms. Among those voicing their objections is Dr. Judy Stone, an infectious disease physician, who took to Twitter to share her disapproval of the policy.
While the fast-food chain’s decision has received backlash, it remains to be seen how they will respond to the feedback from the public and health experts.
