How To Fend Off Mosquitoes in Las Vegas
Mosquitoes in Las Vegas and mosquito bites have been a really bad problem this year. If you’ve found yourself swatting the annoying insect more than usual in 2024, you’re not alone.
As someone who has lived in this city for his entire life, I can’t remember mosquitoes ever being this much of a problem! According to multiple reports, including one from Fox 5 (KVVU – Las Vegas), it’s a relatively new species to the valley called the Aedes Aegypti mosquito — and boy these suckers sure are aggressive!
According to Fox 5’s reporting, the mosquito was introduced to our valley in 2017, but over the years they’ve spread from 6 zip codes to 43. The Southern Nevada Health District warns about this specific breed of mosquito because of the way they drink blood. Firstly, they prefer human blood over other animals and secondly, they are known to bite multiple times while feeding.
Mosquitos In Las Vegas: What Can We Do To Prevent Bites?
The bad news is that these mosquitos are here to stay – at least for a few more months this year. The health district has a Mosquito Surveillance Team who sets up traps around the valley. If you’re noticing these pests in your neighborhood, you can call them at (702) 759-1633 and they can come out to set up traps. According to their team, these pests will be active at least until October.
Thankfully, there are things we all can do to minimize and protect ourselves from getting bitten this summer, and some of these tips might surprise you!
Of course, the easiest thing you can do is apply mosquito repellant on yourself. Another thing you can do is eliminate standing water in your area. The SNHD suggests regularly emptying and cleaning containers that collect water. This includes things like buckets and bird baths, because this particular breed of mosquito doesn’t need much water to thrive.
The website Food & Wine also put together a few tips to help you avoid getting bitten this summer. Strangely enough, they recommend skipping beer… According to their article, drinking beer can make you more attractive to mosquitos.
Food & Wine also warns against eating bananas during these summer months. They say that bananas increase your chances of getting bitten and they recommend snacking on grapes instead.
However, there are some foods that might help keep mosquitoes at bay. You might want to think about incorporating garlic, sage, basil, grapefruit and onions into your meals to fend off the bugs.
