Las Vegas Is One Of The Best Cities To Be A Nurse
When it comes to the best cities to be a nurse, you might be in one of them, especially if you’re reading this in Nevada. After the events of 2020, we all know how valuable nurses are – But there’s a growing nursing shortage that’s affecting the entire country. Speaking to my friend Esteban, inadequate pay is one of the top reasons why he believes so many people either leave the profession or move on to becoming a travel nurse.
Esteban is an old buddy of mine. We met in 2006 in an online video game lobby and have remained real life friends ever since. He lives near Miami, Florida, but he has traveled across the country because other cities pay better. It’s something he started doing during the Covid-19 pandemic and it’s something he says he isn’t opposed to doing again, simply because it makes financial sense for him to be a travel nurse. And he’s not alone.
The National Average Salary For Nurses
The website MoneyGeek recently ran a study that analyzed the salaries of nurses in over 100 metropolitan areas in the United States. They wanted to determine where the best (and worst) places for nurses to work are around the country. Their study was based of a few key factors such as living costs, location, and income after taxes.
On average, a registered nurse in the U.S. makes around $86K before taxes. However, the average take home pay drops to around $65K after you factor taxes and cost of living.

Two places that make more than the national average are Sacramento, California and Houston, Texas. They take the top 2 spots, respectively. However, nurses in Sacramento are significantly hit harder by taxation. Before taxes, Sacramento nurses have an average salary of $157K but it drops to $88K after taxes, according to MoneyGeek’s study. Meanwhile, Houston nurses have an average pre-tax salary of $93K but realistically see $79K after taxes.
Our city of Las Vegas makes the top 5! In Clark County, the average pre-tax annual salary is $96K, but it only drops to $78K when adjusted for taxation. That places us as the 4th best city for nurses in regard to take-home pay.
The Worst Cities To Be A Nurse
How does the joke go? It’s called “Gross” pay for a reason. In Honolulu, a nurse’s gross pay is $134K but drops to an adjusted take-home pay of $50K because of taxes and cost of living. Washington D.C. also tops the bad side of the list; their pre-tax salary is $98K that becomes $48K when adjusted.
