Self-Service Screening Is Coming To Las Vegas Airport
I don’t know how I feel about this, to be honest with you guys. You know those self checkout counters that force you to “figure it out” at the grocery store? Well, something similar is coming to Harry Reid International Airport, in Las Vegas. According to multiple reports, the TSA will be testing out self-service screening at LAS soon.
CBS Mornings reports that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) hopes the new technology makes security checks faster for travelers. The TSA also thinks it’ll make things safer too.
But Will It Actually Be Safer?
Safety is something that concerns me the most. Because, now instead of trusting someone who’s been trained to do a specific job, we’ll be trusting random people. And who knows what those people’s intentions are? Not to mention, the comparison I made earlier with self checkout counters at the grocery store… Some outlets believe self checkout counters have made those places LESS secure. This report from CBS News reveals that nearly a third of Gen-Zers have admitted to stealing from self checkout aisles. 31% of Gen-Z consumers have stolen items from self checkout kiosks. That’s when compared to 15% of consumers of any age.
TSA Says Self Checkout Begins Soon At Harry Reid
According to another report by CNN, testing for the brand new system begin soon, in mid-March. CNN reports that TSA PreCheck passengers at LAS “will be the first travelers to have the option to use the new system…”
Furthermore, Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) will be available to help travelers if needed. However, the TSA makes it sound as if most people should be able to figure it out with the help of a video screen. The video will provide step-by-step instructions and passengers can go at their own pace.
With more and more events being announced, like F1 and the most recent Super Bowl, tourism in our city has been booming! It should come as no surprise why Las Vegas has been chosen as the testing ground self-service screening.
