‘Singles In America,’ Insights From Match’s Relationship Study
Ahead of Valentine’s Day and Singletine’s Day, Match.com, a dating website, released its 13th annual Singles in America study. This year’s study asked a nationally representative sample of 5,000+ singles their thoughts on dating and AI, non-monogamous relationships, and issues related to comprehensive sex and education. According to Match.com, the study includes insights from 70,000 singles throughout the study’s 13-year run. It addresses major trends and new developments in sex, love, and marriage.
Their study revealed that 31% of singles have explored consensual non-monogamy. Only 49% said a traditional, two-person relationship is their ideal scenario right now. Additionally, 79% of singles and 83% of Gen Z’ers believe they can still have a lifelong marriage. So, marriage isn’t dying.
The most common types of non-monogamous relationships include monogamish, polyamory, open relationships, and swinging. Monogamish is not totally open, but sometimes you sleep with other people. Polyamory is where your relationship involves three people or more. According to the study, open relationships have a committed primary relationship that openly allows romantic and/or sexual activity with other people. Meanwhile, swinging is when you both go out and look for other sexual partners together.
Not everyone wants sex, and some people are relying on AI.
The study found that 21% of singles said they don’t want a sexual relationship right now.
Regarding AI, one in seven online daters is using it. According to the study, 43% of daters have used it to write their dating profile, and 37% have used AI to write their first text to someone. Nothing says “date me” and “pure romance” like an automated AI response.
For the second year in a row, money was voted as one of the top obstacles for dating. The study shows that 73% of singles say being financially stable is a top quality they look for.
Another interesting thing found in the study is that people turn to their exes for dating advice. One in ten singles does this. Exes may not be great daters, but they may be good at giving dating advice. Good to know.
