OPINION: People Need To Stop Interviewing Gypsy Rose
Can we talk about this whole Gypsy Rose Blanchard situation? Chances are you’ve heard about her story. Like many of you, I’m sure, I’ve been fascinated by it. Gypsy was recently released from prison, after serving 8 years for the 2nd degree murder of her mom. The wild thing, is that most people are on her side.
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy
For anyone unaware, for years, Gypsy was a victim of a form of abuse known as Munchausen by proxy. Her mother convinced her that she was sick and needed to be in a wheelchair. Her mother also kept her out of school, shaved her head and forced her to have procedures that Gypsy never needed. Because Gypsy was always fine.
It Was All Lies
Over time, Gypsy began to realize that she was being manipulated. She noticed that she could walk and eventually she met a man through a dating site and that’s when the two of them came up with the idea to free her from her mother’s abuse. A plan that would lead to the murder of Gypsy’s mom.
So, a few weeks ago, when Gypsy was released from prison the media went nuts. All of a sudden, a girl who has stated that she never wanted to be famous was doing all kinds of talk shows and interviews. Whether she wants the fame or not, there’s no denying it has come her way. With her social media platforms raking in millions of likes per post, it got me thinking, how good can all this attention be for a survivor of abuse?
What’s Best For Gypsy Rose Blanchard?
According to a Business Insider article I stumbled across today, a psychiatrist named Marc Feldman is also wondering the same thing. In the article, he mentions, “… nobody seems to be asking the question of what’s best psychologically for Gypsy, and I wish more people would.”
Look, I’ve never been released from prison. I never dealt with the horrors she had to. I’m torn, because I know she’s probably under extreme pressure to try and make an income. But I just hope these interviews aren’t setting her back. When it’s all said and done, I truly hope her mindset is in a better place.
