A New Law Requires Daily Exercise For Dogs
If you read my blog post from yesterday, you know what my new year’s resolutions are for 2024. But if you follow me on social media, you can probably guess what my resolution was LAST year. I walk. A lot, actually. It’s good exercise. On short short days, I do 3 miles. The furthest I’ve walked in a day is probably 7 or 8 miles, and if I didn’t have to start my workday at 11am, I could probably go further than that.
I like walking. It helps me clear my mind. Also, I get to listen to a lot of music (or podcasts) while I do it. Plus, I’ve actually lost a decent amount of weight by doing it.
I especially love this time of the year because I get to bring my dog on every walk I take. His name is Steve. He’s a little Boston Terrier… and let me tell you, Steve can walk forever! I wish I had his energy, because that dog’s batteries do not run out! He just keeps going, and going, and going…
And because we walk so much, I’d be safe from a new law that just passed in Florida. According to a Fox 35 Orlando article, the new law says that if you skip your dog’s daily walk, it’s a criminal offense. And while it’s unlikely that a dog owner will be immediately penalized for missing the occasional walk, it’s actually a real possibility. Talk about extreme, right?
The city where the law was passed is Deltona. It’s located about 20 miles north of Orlando. The new law states that dog owners need to ensure that their animal gets daily exercise. It’s part of a broader set of regulations that are aiming at preventing animal cruelty.
When you dissect the new new, it states that animals must receive appropriate daily exercise. There are also factors like the dog’s: age, health, and breed. For example, a young, active breed like a border collie will need more exercise, while a small breed like a Pomeranian (or my Boston Terrier Steve) might be adequately active indoors.
Personally, I don’t know how they’ll police a law like this. But I’m interested to see if anyone gets written up soon.
