More And More Americans Are Experiencing Tipping Fatigue
Feeling overwhelmed by tipping expectations? You’re not alone! According to a recent study, the average American finds themselves tipping at least five individuals every week, sparking what experts call “tipping fatigue.”
A whopping 53% of individuals surveyed confessed to experiencing this fatigue, indicating a growing annoyance with the tipping culture.
Some individuals are even reporting encounters with an unexpected tipping dilemma: self-checkout machines nudging for gratuities. Yes, you heard that right! Lemme get this straight: you’re expected to scan your items, bag your purchases, and now, lo and behold, the machine requests a tip? I mean, I consider myself a decent tipper, but tipping a machine? That’s something I wasn’t quite prepared for!
Here are five more tipping trends to be on the lookout for:
1. The Dread of Looking Stingy
Ever left a tip unwillingly? You’re among the 43% who simply tip to avoid coming off as a miser. Another 34% part with their dollars solely to evade the dreaded “cheap” label.
2. The Guilt Factor
Ever felt guilty for withholding a tip, especially when face-to-face with the recipient? Well, you’re not alone! A staggering 70% experience guilt pangs if they decide to forgo a tip, especially when the service provider is within arm’s reach.
3. The Evolving Restaurant Tip Game
In the post-pandemic era, tipping habits at eateries have undergone a transformation. While 42% still tip a minimum of 20%, it’s a decline from the 56% reported in 2021. Interestingly, folks from the Northeast emerge as the most generous when it comes to restaurant gratuity.
4. Changing Dynamics in Food Delivery Tipping
When it comes to tipping food delivery drivers, the numbers tell a tale of fluctuating generosity. While 26% opt for a minimum 20% tip, this number has seen a decline from 32% last year and a significant drop from 38% in previous years. The Midwest region, however, reigns supreme in tipping generosity for takeout orders.
5. ‘Tis the Season to Tip More
Despite the weariness from constant tipping, there’s a surge in tipping generosity around the holiday season. A staggering 65% of respondents admit to upping their tipping game during this festive period.
So, as we approach the holiday season, prepare to see bigger tips hitting various service industries, showcasing the spirit of generosity, even in the face of tipping fatigue.
