Today Is The Sickest Day Of The Year
Ever experienced an oddly quiet day at the workplace? Well, today might just be the day you find out why.
A recent study has crowned Aug. 24 as the “sickest day of the year,” which means this is the day when a significant number of us choose to steer clear of work.
A thorough analysis of five years worth of sick-day data conducted by a company that tracks absenteeism revealed that Aug. 24 takes the cake when it comes to employees calling in sick. Whether they’re genuinely unwell or simply yearning for a day off, more people choose this date to stay away from work than any other throughout the year, according to the study.
As for the exact reasons behind this phenomenon, researchers remain puzzled. Nevertheless, the trend of higher sick day numbers during late summer seems to be a common occurrence, perhaps influenced by children going back to school and the lingering pleasant weather.
Surprisingly, while August may hold the record for the highest single-day sick-leave count, it isn’t the month with the highest overall sick days. That honor goes to February, a month synonymous with heightened illness risk, the study states.
Coming in as the second-sickest day is Feb. 13, which falls right before the dual event of Valentine’s Day and the Super Bowl. The excitement and festivities surrounding these occasions might contribute to the spike in sick-leave requests as well.
Completing the top five sick days are Oct. 25, right before Halloween; Dec. 15, in the bustling holiday season; and the enigmatic April 18. Additionally, Sept. 5, the day following Labor Day, also made the top ten cut.
