Nevada ‘City’ — Not Las Vegas — Voted Best Place To Travel In 2023
This Nevada “city” was recently voted as one out of 50 “best places to travel in 2023.”
Travel+Leisure, a travel and lifestyle publication, recently published an article that highlighted 50 different places that need to be on your travel bucket-list for 2023.
On the top of the list— between Havana, Cuba and Cairo, Egypt — ranks “City, Nevada” as a must-see place to plan you next escapade to.
“City, Nevada” isn’t actually a city at all. In fact, “City” is an art piece that’s located in the Garden Valley area of the rural Great Basin. It’s an experimental art piece in the utter-most ways.
The actual location of this art installation is slightly a secret, according to ArtNews.com. Michael Heizer is the artist who created this monumental piece, which took 50 years to fully build.
Heizer has been creating this “City” since the ’70s with the intention meant to mix “new and old.” The city itself resembles and honors prehistoric structures and civilizations through the art’s use of ” gigantic abstract forms composed of sand, cement, and other materials that emerge from the Nevada desert.”
Interesting, geometric structures pierce from the ground, creating a futuristic yet primitive “town-looking” structure. This sculpture is a mile and half long, and it seems simply jaw-dropping to see this piece in person. But, being able to see “City” isn’t an easy task.
According to City’s website, the Triple Aught Foundation, the organization overseeing the art piece, will only accept six people daily for short day-trips. The price of a visit is $150 for adults and $100 for students. Residents of Lincoln, Nye and White Pine counties can attend City for free. However, reservations are required for all attendees. And considering that only six lucky people a day will be able to visit this art piece, spots for reservations will be competitive.
You must have a reservation to visit this art piece. “Visiting without a pre-arranged visit is thus potentially dangerous, and it is strictly prohibited and is trespassing,” the website states.
Registration for the rest of 2022 is closed. However, the Triple Aught Foundation will start accepting reservations for the 2023 season starting Jan. 2, 2023 at 12:01 a.m. To see photos, click here.
