Maren Morris Was Bowled Over By This Love Song From Her Husband
Maren Morris and her husband Ryan Hurd have done a lot of songwriting together, and when he had an idea for a new love song to write while the couple was in Hawaii, Maren was thrilled.
She told us, ” ‘I Can’t Love You Anymore’ is a song that we wrote in Hawaii. Greg Kirsten, Ryan Hurd, and I. And Ryan had that title; ‘I Can’t Love You Anymore.’ And you know I’ve written with him so many times I can always tell when he’s like got a fire in his eyes, and he knows he’s gonna bowl me over with the idea. And he was right, so he said the hook. ‘I can’t love you any more than I do now.’ And I was hooked. I loved it.”
Morris added, “It reminded me of the John Prine ‘In Spite of Ourselves’ duet. And it was just sort of this like, super quirky, realistic, romantic look at two people that are bonkers but made for each other. So that’s one of my favorites. “
“In Spite of Ourselves” is the title track to John Prine’s 13th album, featuring duets with various women, including Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless and Emmylou Harris. It was released in 1999.
The lyrics to “I Can’t Love You Anymore” include, “Shoulda known what I was getting in / Fallin’ for a boy from Michigan / You love your mom like every Midwest kid / You like driving to Texas / You put up with all my exes / To deserve you, don’t know what the hell I did.”
The chorus includes the lyrics, “I can’t love you anymore / I can’t love you anymore / I can’t love you any more than I do now / You can try to talk me down / But I can say without a doubt / I can’t love you any more than I do now.”
Maren posted the single’s cover on Instagram a week ago. One fan responded, “I couldn’t love this single choice anymore! Let’s gooo!.” Another fan wrote, “Obsessed with this song.”
