Billy Ray Cyrus On ‘Old Town Road’ Winning A CMA: ‘There Is No Box’
Billy Ray Cyrus and Lil Nas X came backstage at the CMA Awards after winning the Musical Event of the Year for “Old Town Road.”
Cyrus told us that the song’s long road to be accepted makes the award a bit sweeter: “It’s perfect for my career. The award that I win in country music is a song that was banned. Like Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash said, ‘Be an original.’ Live your life like there is no box. Music is music and it’s all about the fans. ‘Old Town Road’ was the people’s song.”
Lil Nas X added, “I’m happy to go to any award show. Just to be here at this point of my life is amazing. There is so much positivity within in this community. I love it.”
