Sesame Street has a history of respectfully tackling heavy issues, and now they are taking on addiction. In a recent segment, it is revealed that Karli the Muppet is in foster care because her mom battles addiction.

In the clip, Karli thanks Chris Knowings for taking care of her and Elmo. Chris explains that Karli's mom is having a hard time. "So, in order to help her get better, she goes to meetings with her group. They all sit in a circle." Karli then explains her mom's meetings in detail. "They talk about grown-up problems. She goes every day so that she stays healthy. You see, my mom needs help learning to take better care of herself."

In another clip, Karli introduces Salia, a girl with parents in recovery. In the video, Salia explains, "Addiction is a sickness - it makes people feel like they need drugs and alcohol to feel okay. They were gone for 60 days, and it felt like 60 years."
