New Study Shows Tattoo Stigma Decreasing in the Workplace
Anyone with visible tattoos has likely heard that old line about how their ink will be a deterrent to landing a job, but according to study from the research journal Human Relations, that school of thought is becoming a thing of the past.
In this study, researchers concluded that there was, “No empirical evidence of employment, wage or earnings discrimination against people with various types of tattoos.” Perhaps the most interesting find was this:
“Not only are the wages and annual earnings of tattooed employees in the United States statistically indistinguishable from the wages and annual earnings of employees without tattoos, but tattooed individuals are also just as likely, and in some instances even more likely, to gain employment.”
Yeah…remember this study next time your judgemental grandparent or aunt or uncle makes a comment on your tattoo/tattoos!
Over 2,000 people from all 50 U.S. states from city, suburb and rural areas were surveyed in this study, so there was certainly a good variety of subjects for this study.
Another interesting discovery in this study? Tattoos seem to be more popular with women than men. Only 23 percent of men surveyed said they had at least one tattoo compared to 37 percent of women surveyed. Who’d a thunk it?
