ICYMI: Brantley Gilbert: I’m Happy, But My Music Can’t Be About Just That
In writing songs and making music, Brantley Gilbert has always drawn heavily on his personal life for inspiration. But being a really happy guy, like he is these days, can be a problem.
Brantley, now happily married for more than two years, understands that his music can’t be only about that. It’s a subject he and wife Amber have discussed from time to time. “We had a conversation about that early on and she’s known for a long time that I’m in a position now where nobody really wants to hear a whole record full songs about ‘Well, I’m married and I’m married,'” Brantley says through his record label. “That’s not to say that we don’t do a lot of fun things and share things together that I’m gonna write about, but we have a long history. So I’ve got a lot of history to write about that can still be about her.”

In a way, Amber has been a part of all of his songs. “I’ve found that even songs that I’ve started in the past about other people, when I really thought about the emotions that I was trying to depict and express in those songs, she was always there,” he admits. “When I thought about love, really actually like giving myself to somebody and somebody that could actually get the parts of me that nobody else gets to see, she was always there.”
And since early November, a son – Barrett Hardy-Clay – has been there. He, too, has been an inspiration. “I’m just speechless,” Brantley told People shortly after Barrett’s birth. “Watching the delivery, I don’t even know what to say. Amber and I are just so thankful and blessed to have this beautiful little boy.”
