The Horror Movies That Were Nominated For (Or Won) An Oscar!

For many years, horror movies were overlooked by the Oscars, but then a demon-possessed toddler and a chianti-loving serial killer changed everything!

Here are the top ten horror movies that have received Academy Award nominations and wins, in no particular order.

The Silence of the Lambs (Winner)

One of the most quotable movies on this list. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) became the third film in Academy history to win the "Big Five" Academy Awards for producing, directing, acting, and screenwriting following It Happened One Night (1934) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975).

Get Out (Winner)

Get Out was chosen by the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and Time as one of the top ten films of the year. Peele won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay at the 90th Academy Awards, with additional nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Kaluuya).

The Sixth Sense

Overall, The Sixth Sense was nominated for six Academy Awards and four British Academy Film Awards, but won none. The film received three nominations from the People's Choice Awards and won all of them, with lead actor Bruce Willis being honored for his role.

Psycho (1960)

Psycho was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Leigh and Best Director for Hitchcock. Psycho is now considered one of Hitchcock's best films, and is arguably his most famous work.

A Quiet Place

Perhaps my personal favorite movie on this list, "A Quiet Place" only received one Oscar nomination, for sound editing. It lost to "Bohemian Rhapsody."

Misery (Winner)

I still think about Kathy Bates (and this movie) whenever I see a sledge hammer. Bates rose to prominence with her performance in Misery (1990), for which she won both the Academy Award for Best Actress. Bates also took home a Golden Globe for her performance in the film.

Parasite (Winner)

Parasite is a movie that I recommend to everyone who tells me they love cinema. You think it's one thing, but then it transforms into a completely different film. It's a pretty special movie and one that I wish I could watch again for the first time. Among its numerous accolades, Parasite won four awards at the 92nd Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film.

The Exorcist (Winner)

Who else doesn't have a stomach for pea soup because of this movie? Some people, myself included still consider The Exorcist to be the greatest horror film ever made. It's one of the most acclaimed horror movies in history, The Exorcist was nominated in ten different categories at the Academy Awards. Even though it failed to win the Best Picture Prize, Friedkin's gem did pick up Oscars in other categories, such as Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound.

Black Swan (winner)

This is the only movie on this list I still haven't seen... I know... I'll work on that, but I do know that Natalie Portman took home a golden statue for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

Fatal Attraction

Fatal Attraction picked up an impressive 6 nominations at the 1988 Academy Awards show, but unfortunately didn't win in any of the categories it was nominated for.
