I recently read a survey that suggests that tons of Gen Z and Millennials are breaking up with their rich friends due to the excessive costs associated with maintaining those friendships.

Las Vegas is a rough city when you're the poor one. Trust me, I know first hand. I've dealt with being the poor friend when I was younger. It's one of the reasons I love working in radio so much!

Life can be expensive, and radio gave me opportunities to do expensive things, but also to give back to our listeners in such meaningful ways.

From concert tickets to all-expenses-paid trips, our radio station strives to create unforgettable moments for our audience. There's nothing quite like seeing the joy on someone's face when they win a prize they've been dreaming about or when we surprise them with an incredible opportunity. It's moments like these that remind me of the power of radio to bring happiness into people's lives.

But it's not just about the material things.

We've also had the chance to make a significant impact on people's lives through our giveaways. One of the most memorable experiences was when we gifted a beautiful couple with IVF treatment that allowed them to fulfill their dream of starting a family. Being a part of their journey and witnessing their joy was truly heartwarming.

I'm aware that this job might not last forever, but for as long as I have the privilege of working in radio, I will continue to have a blast giving people incredible experiences. Seeing the smiles, gratitude, and sometimes even tears of happiness is an incredible reward in itself. It's a reminder that radio has the power to make a positive difference in the lives of others, and I'm grateful to be a part of that journey.

Unfortunately, there are only so many radio jobs. Gen Z and Millennials aren't all as fortunate as me.

People Are Breaking Up With Their Rich Friends

According to a survey conducted with 1,000 Millennials and Gen Zers, over one-third admitted to having at least one friend who consistently pressures them to spend beyond their means. Shockingly, more than 80% of respondents confessed that they resorted to credit cards or incurred debt in order to keep up with their affluent companions.

These well-off friends often tempt us into overspending on extravagant restaurant meals, pricey bar drinks, luxurious vacations, and elaborate celebrations for occasions like birthdays. Additional expenses can be incurred on clothing and indulgent spa treatments, further exacerbating financial strain.

It Adds Up Quickly

Given that a significant portion of Americans, particularly younger generations, already live paycheck-to-paycheck, these excessive expenditures can quickly add up and become overwhelming. Sometimes, it may seem easier to quietly distance oneself from these friends rather than confront the issue directly or request a more budget-friendly approach to socializing.

It Can Be Challenging

Navigating friendships in light of financial limitations can be challenging, but it's essential to prioritize your financial well-being. Honest conversations about financial boundaries and finding alternative, affordable ways to spend time together can help create a healthier dynamic that doesn't leave you in debt.

Choose Your Circle Wisely

Remember, it's important to surround yourself with friends who respect and support your financial goals, as true friendship should never come at the cost of your financial stability. Never let anyone make you feel pressured into doing the expensive things they want to do.

That being said, we only live once, and that doesn't mean you shouldn't treat yourself now and again.

It's your money. Do with it what you wish.
