Changes At CCSD Continue As Interim Superintendent Opts Out
Oh, what a year it has been when it comes to changes at CCSD. So far this year, the Clark County School District paid Superintendent Jesus Jara to leave, their Chief Financial Officer was shoved out for major accounting issues that led to a major overrun, one trustee was ousted for not living in the state for months, another left before her term was complete because she didn’t get re-elected. Oh, and millions of dollars in lawsuits.
Yeah, it’s been a fun 2024. As the search for new leadership at the top continues, one thing is clear: the current Interim Superintendent doesn’t want the gig.
Brenda Larsen-Mitchell Doesn’t Want Gig To Oversee Changes At CCSD
You may remember early on in the process after the departure of Superintendent Jesus Jara, some on the CCSD Board of Trustees were quite ready to hand the keys to Deputy Superintendent under Jara, Brenda Larsen-Mitchell, the keys to the kingdom. Permanently.
That said, there was not a sea of support for that idea outside of a select few on the board (most of whom are or have departed). That is where the search for a Superintendent began, and while Larsen-Mitchell was up for consideration for the gig, she made the announcement last week that she is not sticking around to oversee the needed changes at CCSD.
“I believe that not applying for the position is the right path to ensure the District can embrace a fresh start with a foundation of unity that builds on its strengths with boundless opportunities in the future,” Larsen-Mitchell said in an email announcement.
She had been with the district since 1994, holding several jobs from the classroom to the boardroom. But considering the massive desire to move on from the Jara administration, there has been some major pushback to have her at the helm.
At the end of the day, changes at CCSD are necessary to right the ship. Kudos to Larsen-Mitchell for reading the room and dipping out of contention.
