Is Taylor Swift a Good Role Model for Kids? A Newsweek Writer Doesn’t Think So
There’s no denying that Taylor Swift is one of the most influential people on the planet. You could even argue that she’s the most influential person, but is Taylor Swift a good role model? A writer for Newsweek is going viral today, because he doesn’t think she is, and the Swifties are coming after him in the article’s comments!
Is Taylor Swift a Good Role Model? This Writer Says She Isn’t
His name is John Mac Ghlionn and he recently had an opinion piece called “Taylor Swift Is Not A Good Role Model” published on Newsweek. He makes the argument that Taylor Swift’s personal choices, mixed with her public persona, may not be the best thing for young fans to idolize.
One of his first points is that Taylor is still unmarried, and childless, at 34-years-old. He questions her lifestyle and asks his readers if these choices are “… ones we want our sisters and daughters to emulate.”
In the article’s comments, a user named Hoss had this to say about Mac Ghillion’s first point:
“At 34, Swift remains unmarried and childless,”
And there it is. The entire argument in half a sentence. The whole article could have been summed up by saying “women’s roles are to be mothers and homemakers starting from an early age, and we need to make sure our young girls understand that.”
Another thing that Mac Ghilionn criticizes is Swifts “revolving door of relationships.” His words, not mine… Don’t come at me, Swifties. He suggests that the amount of men Taylor has been linked to, ever since she’s been in the spotlight, sets a poor example for young women.
Another comment, by a user named Rick Mueller had this to say about Mac Ghillion’s words and about Taylor Swift’s love life:
“John is actually a good writer, and typically, he gets it.
Not this time.
The woman can’t walk the half a block to her gym, she has to ride in an armored SUV.
Tough to have relationships in that situation.”
Later in the article, Mac Ghillion accuses Taylor of being hypocritical for going after the patriarchy while dating “strong, influential men…” and argues that she doesn’t care if it makes her a hypocrite.
Another thing Mac Ghillion criticizes is Taylor Swift‘s tendency to “play the victim” after her breakups.
User LB had this to say:
“So nothing mentioned about the decency she shows to her employees, charitable things she does, or her basic human kindnesses to others? Wow!!!”
