Sam Hunt’s New ‘Locked Up’ Addresses 2019 Arrest
Sam Hunt released his brand-new track, “Locked Up,” on Friday (3/23) along with the official music video, and the video takes us all back to 1968-era Johnny Cash.
Hunt co-wrote the song with Zach Crowell, Jerry Flowers, Shane McAnally, and Josh Osborne. “‘Locked Up’ describes the decisions that landed him that short jail sentence and thanks his wife, Hannah Lee Fowler, for supporting and staying with him through all that. Sam will perform the song at the 2024 CMT Music Awards on April 7, airing Live on CBS from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.
The official music video for the song was shot at the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros, Tennessee, and reimagined the infamous 1968 Johnny Cash performance at Folsom State Prison. Taking on the feel of newly discovered footage from the archives, the video features Hunt with his longtime band and with the centerpiece of the song, his wife, Hannah.
In November of 2019, Sam was arrested after driving the wrong way down an East Nashville road while drunk. The police report says that Hunt was booked into the Metro jail around 6:30 a.m. on charges of driving under the influence and having an open container.

Hunt launched his “Outskirts Tour 2024″ last month (2/22) with a show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He’ll be touring with stops in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Knoxville, and more, and is set to wrap in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 13th.
Sam told us, “My favorite thing about being on the road and playing our music in front of our fans is connecting with the folks who have provided me with a career, an opportunity to live out this dream that I had as a young college graduate years ago.”
He continued, “And I really enjoy being out on the road with my buddies in the band and our whole crew. We have a real family out there now that we’ve been out here for several years; we get to travel and see places that I wouldn’t otherwise get to visit, and we get to play music. And that, at the end of the day, is something that I always wanted to do and that I really enjoy doing, but most importantly, it’s connecting with the fans.”
Hunt really just loves to get out and share his songs with his fans. He concluded, “You write these songs in little rooms in Nashville, and you hope that they mean something to somebody. It’s hard to believe that that’s true until you get out there and see the smiles on people’s faces and see people enjoying themselves and having a good time, and it really gives a lot of meaning to the whole thing.”
