Cinco de Mayo is a yearly celebration held on May 5 of Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. More popular in the United States than in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become associated with celebrating Mexican-American culture. Celebrations began in California, where they have been observed annually since 1863.

Over the years, country music has had a love affair with Mexico, and it has been the location and subject of many country songs and music videos. On this celebration of Mexico, we celebrate ten country music songs about our neighbor country South of the border.

"Beer in Mexico" - Kenny Chesney · 2005

In the liner notes for his The Road and the Radio album, it states that Chesney wrote the song while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for Sammy Hagar's birthday party.

"The Seashores of Old Mexico" - George Strait · 2005

This song was written by Merle Haggard. It was recorded by Hank Snow in 1971, Freddy Weller in 1972, Haggard himself in 1974, and in 1987 Haggard and Willie Nelson recut the song as a duet. George's song version was nominated for Best Male Country Vocal Performance at the 2007 Grammy Awards.

"Refried Dreams" - Tim McGraw · 1994

It was released in February 1995 as the fifth and final single from McGraw's 1994 album Not a Moment Too Soon. The song peaked at number 5 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) chart.

"Moon Over Mexico" - Luke Combs · 2019

"Till It Snows in Mexico" - Reba McEntire · 1986

An album cut from Reba's 1986 album What Am I Gonna Do About You. A fan favorite, the chorus includes the lyrics, "I'm gonna love you / Till it snows in Mexico / Or till the Rio Grande freezes over / Cause darling when God made our love / He threw away the mold / And I'm gonna love you / Till it snows in Mexico."

An album cut Carrie co-wrote for her Storyteller album.
