Inside the Cyrus Family Drama: Divorce, Affairs, and Who Sided with Who?
Here’s the latest news on the Cyrus family drama. On the November 25 episode of the Sibling Revelry with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson podcast (via People) Trish Cyrus, Miley’s mother, opened up about her divorce from her ex-husband, Billy Ray Cyrus. The ex-couple share daughters Miley, and Noah and son Braison. Tish has a daughter, Brandi, and a son, Trace, from her previous relationship. Both were adopted by Billy Ray.
Tish said in the interview, “I never wanted to be divorced. [But] for us, you’re in the public eye and the world that we exist in is already so odd and at sometimes unstable. I wanted to make it work, probably for a little too long, like, for my own mental health. There became a point that, like, I didn’t have a choice.”
The ex-couple filed for divorce in 2010 and 2013 but reconciled both times. However, in April 2022, Tish and Billy Ray finally divorced after 30 years of marriage. The Cyrus family drama has remained in the news as both parties and their children have been airing their sides of the story.
First Public Split in 2010
Billy Ray filed for divorce in October 2010 because of cheating allegations. Tish was said to have an affair with Bret Michaels, frontman of the rock band Poison, who recorded a duet, “Noting to Lose,” with Miley.
According to sources and reported by Us Weekly, Tish was present at one of Michaels’ shows in L.A. He had asked her help via her HopeTown Entertainment production company to produce a movie adaptation of his book, Roses & Thorns. Michaels refuted the allegations.
Second Public Split in 2013
Billy Ray filed the ex-couple’s second split again in June 2013 in Nashville, while Tish filed her own petition in L.A. The manager and producer stated “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce. Miley tweeted Billy Ray the day both divorce petitions were filed per E! News: “@billyraycyrus since your text and email obviously aren’t working would you like to talk like this?”
Barely a month later, the ex-couple who started attending couple’s counseling reconsidered and withdrew the petition.
Final Split in 2022
Tish revealed that before their split in April 2022, they had not lived together since February 2020. Billy Ray moved back to Nashville in 2020 while Tish stayed in L.A. with Miley and Noah.
Separate Lives and the Start of a More Complicated Cyrus Family Drama
In November 2022, Tish confirmed her relationship with Prison Break actor Dominic Purcell. In April 2023 they announced their engagement and got married in August 2023 in California. During the wedding, three of the ex-couple’s children were present. Miley, Brandi and Trace. According to Us Weekly, Braison and Noah were both invited to their mother’s wedding but chose not to attend as both don’t approve of Purcell (there’s a separate Cyrus family drama involving Purcell, we’ll get to that later on).
Billy Ray, on the other hand, got engaged to Firerose, real name, Johanna Rosie, in August 2022. She is 28 years younger than him; they first met on the set of daughter Miley’s Hannah Montana show. They were married in October 2023. In May 2024, however, Cyrus filed for divorce from Firerose citing irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct.

In the ongoing Cyrus family drama, the siblings chose a side between their parents, Billy Ray and Tish.
Miley Cyrus
The most famous of the ex-couple’s children, Miley sided with her mom, Tish. Per Cosmopolitan, “Miley hasn’t gotten over the disrespect she feels Billy Ray showed Tish and the family.” During her acceptance speech for her Grammy Record of the Year win, Miley thanked Tish, her sister Brandi, and boyfriend Maxx Morando, failing to mention Billy Ray.
According to Us Weekly, Billy Ray reached out to Miley in an attempt to repair their relationship and congratulated her on her Grammy win. However, a reunion between the two seems far-fetched, especially since Daily Mail obtained a recording of Billy Ray’s expletive-laden rant against his ex-wife, Firerose, Tish, and daughter Miley. The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer said, “Everyone knows that devil’s a skank,” referring to Miley while calling Tish, “A liar…a whore…and a cheat. Complete skank. Scum of the earth. A fraud.”
Noah Cyrus
Noah was reportedly closer to her dad, Billy Ray because Tish has always been focused on Miley, who has been bringing in all the money due to her successful acting and singing career. She was also reportedly dating Dominic Purcell before her mom, Tish, married him, according to People.
However, it seems that mother and daughter have since reconciled, as they were seen entering a building that offers financial management and legal advice, per Daily Mail.
Trace Cyrus
Trace, Tish’s son from her previous relationship stood by his mother’s side during her wedding. It also seemed he walked her down the aisle. Suffice it to say, he’s team Tish.
Brandi Cyrus
Brandi is also on team Tish. In an interview with Us Weekly, Brandi said, “My mom is in this era of really being unapologetic about who she is and what she’s about. And I love that for her. She has been so supportive of all of us. She’s really the backbone of this family.” She was also present during Tish and Purcell’s wedding.
Braison Cyrus
During the wedding, Braison was seen hanging out with Noah, wearing a shirt with dad Billy Ray printed on it. However, now that Tish and Noah have reconciled, perhaps a reconciliation with Braison is also possible.
Cyrus family drama has been a complicated one, full of ups and downs, public splits, reconciliations, and very public family disputes. Whatever comes next for this family is anybody’s guess.
