Memorial Day weekend is almost here, and Las Vegas: It’s time to prepare.

According to American Automobile Association, an estimated 39.2 million people will travel 50 or more miles from their homes this Memorial Day weekend. So, you guessed it, Las Vegas is undoubtedly one of these destinations.

In fact Priceline, a travel website, analyzed what destinations are most popular among tourist for this upcoming federal holiday. And what ranks as the top destination for Memorial Day weekend? Well, it’s no other than our city of Las Vegas, according to KKVU-TV.

Due to the estimated influx of travelers, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and the Nevada Department of Transportation encourage commuters to “plan accordingly in preparation for heavy traffic and delays throughout the weekend.”

The COVID-19 pandemic also plays a role in elevated activity throughout the holiday weekend due to many people opting out of travel since 2020. Travel levels will have an estimated increase by 8.3% in comparison to 2021. AAA‘s prediction of 39.2 million people having travel plans brings numbers near 2017 levels of activity (ah, the good old days).

“For residents and visitors traveling by car in and out of town, the RTC’s regional traffic management center advises mapping out travel plans ahead of time in anticipation for longer commutes,” the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and the Nevada Department of Transportation said in a press release.

Along with the potential traffic jams, the Coast Guard Auxiliary also emphasizes boat and water safety when it comes to this weekend.

Since Lake Mead‘s levels are low, new water and boat hazards are popping up, according to KVVU-TV.

Doug Bradford with the Coast Guard Auxiliary told KVVU-TV that people should stay vigilant for sandbars, and it’s important to keep life vests on deck.

Although many people will use this weekend as an excuse to “celebrate,” let’s take a moment to remember what this day is about, which is to honor those who are no longer with us.

Memorial Day is a time of honoring and remembering. It’s a dedicated time where our country gives tribute to those who’ve lost their lives fighting for our freedom.

So, if you’re celebrating this upcoming weekend, spending time with family at a cookout or even taking the time to relax; remember why you have the opportunity to do those things.Β  Take some time to give honor and prestige to the soldiers who are a part of Memorial Day.
