Netflix Cracks Down on Password-Sharing: New Restrictions and Charges Introduced
Once upon a time, in the days when I was younger and my pockets were emptier, I relied on the kindness of a family member’s Netflix password. It was a simple arrangement, where I could indulge in endless hours of binge-watching without worrying about the cost. Some of you reading this might have a similar arrangement with a friend or a family member, but the popular streaming service is planning to end it.
Netflix has initiated its crackdown on password-sharing in the United States, marking a significant change in how users can access the popular streaming service. The new policy requires account holders to ensure that anyone using their account lives within the same household, or else face an additional charge.
Effective immediately, Netflix users will have to pay an extra $7.99 for each person living outside their home who wants to access their account. This move aims to discourage password-sharing among friends, distant relatives, and others who are not part of the account holder’s immediate household.
The limitations on sharing vary depending on the subscription plan. Premium subscribers can add up to two non-household members, providing a bit more flexibility, while standard plan subscribers are limited to adding just one additional user.
To enforce the household restriction, primary account holders will need to set a designated location for their devices. This ensures that only those residing in the specified household can enjoy uninterrupted access to the account. However, Netflix has clarified that account usage will still be possible when traveling.
While some users might express frustration over the new policy, Netflix’s experience in implementing similar measures in other countries suggests that the company expects a positive outcome. In regions where password-sharing restrictions were introduced, Netflix witnessed an increase in paid memberships, indicating that users recognized the need for a more robust approach to account sharing.
