Beware the Springtime Sun: Why Late April and Early May Worst for Sunburns

Late April and early May are the worst times of the year for sunburns. It may come as a surprise, but it's the truth. According to dermatologists, the angle of the sun in late April and early May is about the same as it is in late August. But since it's not as hot, we're less likely to cover up or use sunblock. This can lead to an increased risk of sunburns during this time of year, which is why May is recognized as Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

To prevent sunburns and lower your risk of skin cancer, it's important to be aware of the top skin cancer risk factors. The American Academy of Dermatology lists several factors that increase your chances of developing skin cancer. These include having red or blonde hair, skin that burns easily, frequent use of tanning beds, having a weaker-than-average immune system, and working outside or having a history of excessive sun exposure.

It's also essential to avoid tanning beds, which can increase your risk of skin cancer significantly. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, people who use tanning beds before the age of 35 increase their risk of developing melanoma by 59%. If you work outside, be sure to take breaks in the shade and wear protective clothing to reduce your exposure to the sun.

If you're prone to sunburns, you may be at a higher risk of developing skin cancer. That's why it's essential to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays.

Here are a few things you can do to lower your risk...

Wear Protective Clothing

One way to do this is by wearing protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat.

Find Some Shade in These Hours

Shade is obviously going to help, but did you know the time of the day matters too? Find some shade, especially between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. because that's when experts say the sun is at its most harsh.

Wear The Right Sunscreen

You can also apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply it every two hours or more often if you're swimming or sweating.
