Cup o’ Joy: ‘Mattress Mack’ Opens Stores As Warming Centers For Houston Residents
A deadly storm has swept through Texas, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and heat. Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is known for opening his furniture stores for those in need, and this time is no different.
Mack has opened up two of his stores as warming centers during the power outages. The Gallery Furniture’s showrooms in Richmond and Houston will be open to Texans who need a meal and a warm place to stay.
“Least we could do is open this furniture store to let people come into a warmer place,” Mattress Mack told CBS Houston affiliate KHOU. “Sofas and plenty available TVs, plenty of available mattresses, plenty of available and lots of hot food.”
Although its costs money to keep his stores running as shelters, Mattress Mack keeps stepping up when there is a crisis. “We can afford that and what we can’t afford is to cause these people to lose hope, we got to give hem hope,” he said. “This is what my parents would have done.”
