Alyssa sent in her nomination a few days ago and Andie just read it live on the air…. Here is Alyssa’s beautiful nomination:

We all have that one person we look up to, someone who is our role model, has our heart & who we would do anything for. That person is my mother. My mom raised me on her own. I’m 28 now, an only child, & she is still my best friend to this day. We’ve been through a lot together. Countless moves, evictions, she went without necessities to make sure that I had food in my stomach & as much of a normal childhood as possible, despite financial concerns & no father in my life.

Two months ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I always had a “not me” mentality, & as if 2020 hasn’t been bad enough, I didn’t know how to handle this news. Her genetic testing came back positive, meaning the cancer is likely to return. Together, she & I decided that a double mastectomy was the best decision. Along with the procedure comes doctor copays, a surgical copay, new clothing & bras needed, meals, etc. I have been unemployed for months because of Covid & haven’t been able to financially support her so in only one day, I raised enough money from friends, which covered some expenses she has been sick worrying about. I’m amazed by how kind people are, it’s truly heartwarming.

A few weeks ago, my mom had her six hour long surgery, including reconstruction. She’s been staying with me so I can help care for her & the dog, keep her company & love her. We’d been waiting on the pathology reports which tells us if my mom will need further treatment ie radiation or chemo. We received the call recently & my mom is CLEAR! NO MORE CANCER! This year has been full of challenges & obstacles, but the truth is, facing cancer with my mother has been a life changing experience. We are so humbled & thankful for each day. If there’s anything to take away from her battle with cancer, it’s to be positive & never give up.
