“Should We Pitch In For Son’s MacBook or Let Him Budget?”

Hey Andie Summers Show! Our son is about to return to college for the second half of his freshman year. He really wanted a new laptop before the start of his first year but my husband said he had to pay for it since we got him a new one only two years ago.
Since being home from break, he has worked almost every single day at the local restaurant bussing tables, picking up shifts, washing dishes. He is saving up to buy this $4,000 MacBook Pro that he needs for editing videos for class but he is $500 short and leaves Thursday.
I want to give him the $500 because he’s worked so hard and he deserves it plus it will help him in school but my husband says he should purchase what he can afford and get a cheaper laptop. What should we do? Who is right?
