Clark County To Open Cooling Stations For Excessive Heat In Las Vegas
If you have one of those fancy smart speakers in your house, it probably warned you about our first excessive heat warning of the summer. It’s on the way, starting Wednesday through Friday, with a possibility of it extending through Monday. The peak of the heatwave should happen on Thursday, with some parts of the Las Vegas Valley seeing 111 degree weather! Here’s where it gets wild, they’re saying that temperatures could soar anywhere between 5 and 15 degrees above what’s normal this time of the year! Yikes!
In response to the upcoming heatwave, Clark County has announced the opening of several cooling stations around the valley to provide a little relief from the sweltering heat.
Excessive Heat Is No Laughing Matter
According to the Clark County website, heat kills around 600 people per year in the country. In fact, that same number of lives have been lost in southern Nevada because of how hot it gets here during the summer months. While everyone is susceptible to falling ill from the heat, it’s especially dangerous for infants, children, and the elderly and outdoor workers. People who suffer from chronic illnesses should also take extra precautions during the summer months in the Las Vegas valley.
Their website also offers some hot weather tips. The tips range from everything between staying indoors whenever possible, wearing the appropriate clothing for summer activities, utilize pools, wearing sunscreen, and pacing yourself whenever outdoors.
