Scripps National Spelling Bee – The Most Misspelled Words By State
I’ve always been a big fan of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. I love it when the kids get super hyped because they nailed an incredibly difficult word, or when you watch some of them become insanely competitive and trash talk their competition. I feel like there’s always such great personalities that come out from each yearly competition. For example, remember that one kid who’d speak into his hands each time before spelling his given word? Total Rockstar! Or how about that other kid (pictured above) who literally gave the crowd the death stare while the victory confetti dropped on top of him? Baller status! I love that kid!
Or you just get a sweetheart of a kid who wins it all, like last year’s winner Dev Shaw. I loved seeing the joy take over his face when he correctly spelled “psammophile” and he realized he just became the champion. Do you want to know how hard “psammophile” is to spell? Do me a favor and type it into a Microsoft Word document and see what happens. MS Word doesn’t even recognize it as a correct word and puts a red line underneath it. Dev Shaw, you absolute legend!
Some States Would Really Struggle In The Scripps National Spelling Bee
Well, because the spelling bee finals are tomorrow (May 30th, 2024), Google has put out their annual list of the words that each state struggles to spell. The search engine analyzed the top-trending “How to spell” searches from all 50 states and some of their discoveries are downright embarrassing for some states.
For example, California is known for having some of the most beautiful people on the planet, but according to Google, folks in California have a hard time spelling the word “pretty.” You okay, Cali?
It’s not much better for folks in New Mexico, the word that gives them the most trouble is “quiet.”
In North Dakota, “secret” is the word that trips them up, and Oklahomans can’t spell “animal.”
People in Maine often misspell “heard” with “herd” and the word “said” is difficult for folks in Virgina.
What Word Do People In Nevada Struggle With?
This one made me laugh, because if you’re reading this right now, you’re using it. My fellow Nevadans have a difficult time spelling the word “internet.”

However, some states, like Wyoming and Washington, have words that I’ve had trouble spelling in the past. Wyomans often misspell “corduroy” and Washingtonians have trouble with “Hanukkah.”
