Is California To Blame For The Rise In Retail Theft In Las Vegas?
Retail theft is becoming a real problem on our side of the country. Over the years, people have noticed an uptick in the crime. With a lot of the perpetrators doing it in broad daylight! Just a few weeks ago, the Apple Store in Summerlin was a target for these kinds of thieves. The whole thing was caught on camera too. In fact, because of tools like social media, a lot of these crimes are being documented for the whole world to see.
The people committing the act of retail theft, oftentimes, seem to be professionals at the crime. When you watch a lot of the videos coming out of California, or the recent one in Summerlin, they usually appear calm and take their time. It’s almost as if they aren’t afraid of getting caught.
Metro Is Combating Retail Theft
Earlier this week, Sheriff Kevin McMahill issued a State of The Department address. During the address, Sheriff McMahill covered an array of topics. One of those topics was retail theft. Sheriff McMahill said that his unit has recovered roughly $5.4 million in stolen goods and items, since he’s taken over as Sheriff.
According to a recent report by Las Vegas news channel, News 3 Las Vegas, metro recovered over $30 thousand in stolen items in the last week! In News 3’s reporting, they spoke to Lt. Travis Cunningham with Las Vegas Metro. According to Lt. Cunningham, the smash and grab trend seen in California doesn’t happen in our state too often. However, Lt. Cunningham says the sweeping trend is common.
Lt. Cunningham is with Metro’s organized retail crime section. The unit was reactivated last year in efforts to stop retail theft. Lt. Cunningham also notes while some of the crime is being committed by Californians, a lot of it is being done by locals, who then travel over state lines to sell the merchandise.
And because of the rise in retail theft, a lot of stores are taking measures into their own hands. Perhaps you’ve noticed more and more items locked away behind glass. It doesn’t always look the nicest, but it’s something stores are doing to deter these kinds of thieves.
