Tax Day Has Been Extended This Year
I’ve already filed my taxes this year, but I know that many people haven’t. If you’re one of those people, don’t worry! You still have time to get them done.
Typically, Tax Day falls on April 15th, but this year we have a few extra days. Since the 15th is a Saturday, the deadline would be the following Monday. However, because Monday is a holiday in D.C. called Emancipation Day, Tax Day is actually on Tuesday the 18th this year. This holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the District of Columbia, which happened on April 16th, 1862, eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation.
Since the holiday falls on a Sunday this year, it’s celebrated on Monday and taxpayers across the country get one extra day to file their taxes or ask for an extension. I know that taxes can be stressful, and a recent poll found that about half of Americans are doing their own taxes this year, with 48% saying that just thinking about them can be headache-inducing. However, if you file electronically and choose direct deposit, the IRS says you should receive your refund within three weeks.
So, if you haven’t done your taxes yet, don’t panic! Take advantage of the extra time we have this year and get them done before the new deadline.
