TikTok Limits Daily Viewing to One Hour for Kids Under 18
TikTok is implementing a new policy that will limit users under the age of 18 to one hour of viewing per day, in an effort to promote safe and responsible use of the app. The new feature will be rolled out gradually over the next few weeks, and after the first hour of use, children under the age of 13 will need a parent or guardian’s permission to continue watching.
For children aged 13 and up, they will be able to enter their own code to continue using the app, but will receive alerts to remind them to take a break from screen time. This new policy will be the default for all under-18 accounts, not just new ones.
Parents will also have access to more information about how much time their children are spending on the app, and they will be able to customize the limit for different days. Adults can also opt in to receive alerts for themselves.
TikTok says that this policy is in response to growing concerns about the impact of excessive screen time on children’s health and well-being. However, some experts suggest that this may also be an attempt to appease the US government, which has been considering a ban on the app due to concerns about data privacy and national security.
In December, Congress passed a law to ban the app on government-issued phones, and the White House has given government agencies 30 days to comply. While TikTok claims that they are doing this for the sake of their users, it remains to be seen whether this new policy will be enough to satisfy regulators and lawmakers.
