‘Driverless’ Car Kills 77-Year-Old Las Vegas Man
Tragedy struck a local Las Vegas home when a 77-year-old man was the victim of an unfortunate, freak car accident.
According to Las Vegas Metro Police Department, a “driverless” car rolling down a driveway killed a 77-year-old man. According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday around 1 p.m. near the 2000 block of Quarry Ridge Street near Sahara Avenue and Town Center Drive. The incident started when the man exited his 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, which was parked in the driveway.
Once the man left the car, he stood behind it. This is when the vehicle started to roll down the sloped driveway, which knocked the man to the ground.
“The male was knocked to the ground, at which point the car rolled over him and began to drag him,” the release from police states.
The victim sustained major injuries as a result of the collision. Police said that despite life-saving efforts, officials pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The release further states that impairment is not believed to be a contributing factor to this collision. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Collision Investigation Section will continue to investigate this incident.
Another case similar to this tragic occurrence happened in Rhode Island. According to WPRI Channel 12 in Providence, Rhode Island, a 53-year-old man died in an eerily similar way.
According to news reports from the previous incident, which occurred in 2016, a 53-year-old man accidently put his car in “neutral” instead of “park.” The police crash report states that the 53-year-old victim got out of his car and walked behind it. Since the car was in neutral, the vehicle rolled backwards and crushed the man. When police arrived to the scene, authorities found a man faced down, pinned under the car. Officials pronounced the man dead at the scene.
And this isn’t the last recorded case of unsuspecting people getting pulled and ran over by their own car. A 73-year-old woman was also pulled down by her car in the middle of the street. The woman got out of her car to close the loose gas cap, but didn’t realize that she didn’t put the car in park. The car started to roll backwards, took her down and rolled over her leg. However, this story ended in a positive note with the 73-year-old woman leaving the scene with no major injuries.
