Yesterday, Variety reported that a series based on Fried Green Tomatoes is in the works at NBC. Reba McEntire is slated to star and Norman Lear will executive produce.
The project is described as a modernization of the 1987 Fannie Flagg novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and the 1991 movie. The plot focuses on present-day Idgie Threadgoode (played by Mary Stuart Masterson in the film and McEntire in this project) "returns to Whistle Stop after a decade away, she must wrestle with a changed town, estranged daughter, faltering cafe and life-changing secret."
Fried Green Tomatoes (along with another 1991 film, Thelma & Louise) were said)to be inspirations to the Chicks' "Goodbye Earl" song and video.
